How is Your iPad and its Apps Impacting Your Child's Life?

I read the following article with interest… as my 2 year/ 5 month old granddaughter has been using my iPad since before she turned 2 years old.  She not only can say iPad, but she knows which screen of iPad apps are HERS and can easily navigate through all her games, educational apps and ebooks.  Little does she realize that when she helps the crab eat the numbers to form her numerals that she is actually learning to form them herself.  The iPad is a wonderful learning tool for all children, no matter their age!

Do you have a child that is using your iPad?  How is it impacting their life?

Baby’s First iPad

By Philip Berne on Fri Dec 24th, 2010

The first thing my son says when I come into his room in the morning is “iPad.” He’s not quite 2 years old. He can talk in some basic sentences, and will repeat just about anything you say. He can’t dress himself yet, except for his shoes, a pair of Crocs, which are easiest for toddlers to put on themselves. He’s a wiz with the iPad.

Google Voice vs. Whistle; Which is Best?

What we here at Apps for iPads  do not understand is why anyone would settle for Google Voice, which clearly states "

While you can’t use your iPod or iPad as a phone" when iPad users can use Whistle, which easily allows you actually use your iPad as a phone, and any call to the continental USA is FREE from anywhere in the WORLD!?  Check out how easy it is to do at http://appsforipads.net/apps-for-ipads/ipad-tips-and-tricks/apps-for-ipads-tips-tricks-turn-your-ipad-into-a-cell-phone NOW!

So do YOU use your iPad as a mobile phone?  Which do you prefer? Do you like Whistle (which does not require both  participants to belong to it's service) as much as I do?

Please don't forget to give us a shout out if you liked this article!

Google Voice app now supports iPad & iPod Touch

Tuesday, December 14, 2010 | 8:35 AM

(cross-posted from the Google Voice Blog)

Since we launched Google Voice for iPhone a few weeks ago, we’ve been hard at work to add a few improvements that didn’t make it into the first release.

At the top of the list was adding support for iPod Touch and iPad. Starting today, you can download a new version of Google Voice that lets you use all the features of the app on these devices, such as sending and receiving free text messages - except, of course, make cellular calls.

While you can’t use your iPod or iPad as a phone, you can use it to initiate Google Voice calls with your phones. We call this feature Click2Call. Simply click any ‘Call’ button in the Google Voice app on your iPod or iPad and then select which of your phones you want to ring. Google Voice will call your phone and then connect your call.

Is Your iPad TOPS on YOUR List?

Time magazine awarded Apple four slots on its 2010 top 10 gadgets list, naming the iPad the No. 1 gadget of 2010, which is not suprising.

While sales definitely factor into its nomination the mere fact that already, in far less than a year, the iPad, especially an app enriched iPad has made a significant impact on many lives.  People are using it, not like its predecessors, as merely a web browser or ebook reader, but it is quickly becoming the go-to tool for business too.  With note taking apps like Note Taker HD and Notes Plus as well as services such as Whistle and Dropbox, your office can be virtually anywhere!

The iPad has become the act to beat… so how are YOU using your iPad in your everyday life? Do you think it will succeed in staying in the top slot and what do YOU think it needs to do to stay there?

Top 10 Gadgets

1. iPad

By DOUG AAMOTH Thursday, Dec. 09, 2010

It's not the first touchscreen tablet in the history of computing, but it's easily the most successful so far.

With 3 million iPads sold in their first month alone and a market for interactive magazines and newspapers created almost overnight, Apple finally managed to make tablet computing cool.

Do YOU Use the Dragon Dictation App on YOUR iPad?

Dragon Dictation comes out on top again, scoring the #6 spot in Time’s top of EVERYTHING LIST of 2010.

But that’s for their iPhone app.  So what do you think of the Dragon Dictation app on your iPad?

While it’s a universal app I don’t find myself thinking to use it, but then maybe it will function better with

the new iOS 4.2.1?  Have you had a chance to try it out yet?

What’s YOUR take on Dragon Dictation on the iPad?  We’re going to have to review that one soon,

but in the meantime give us your feedback so we can feature you and your comments in our Apps for iPads featured article!

6. Dragon Dictation

By KATIE ROONEY Thursday, Dec. 09, 2010

Who has time for tapping? The Dragon Dictation app turns a smartphone into a personal assistant by allowing users to dictate emails, text messages and status updates for Twitter and Facebook, as well as record voice reminders and more. While voice apps aren't new, Dragon Dictation is one of the best and translates your voice with impressive accuracy. The developer also claims that speaking and seeing your words transcribed on the screen is five times faster than typing it out on your smartphone (which seems true after using the app for a short amount of time). Don't speak English? Don't worry. The app currently supports six major languages.

So Do YOU Want to Design an iPad app Magazine Cover?

Many years ago a great friend, a “starving” art student at the Columbus School of Art, entered

a contest promoted to him by one of his professors.  The result of that challenge was that Dennis

designed what was to become the reverse side of the bicentennial silver dollar.

That was then, when ideas were cast in wax and metal.  Now, in the days of computer generation and

interactive artwork we see new opportunities for new artists.

As a fiber artist that always seemed to work “outside the box” I am happy to see this opened up so that

a new generation of artists can make their break, reputation, fame and name. Because its not always

about the paycheck… go ahead ask my how I know that and I will show you five runway art to wear garments

that traveled the world under my label… and I never took a cent for their creation… the creating was what it

was all about, and the payoff came in intangibles.

Good luck to all you designers out there!

Designers: Here’s the Brief for Project Magazine’s iPad Cover Contest

As part of its launch on Tuesday, Virgin’s first iPad-only magazine, Project, announced a contest to redesign the magazine’s animated cover.

In order to get ahold of the brief and assets for the contest, however, designers (or their unemployed friends) had to locate one of four paper mannequins (with Sir Richard Branson, pictured above) touring New York and San Francisco, each of which held the coordinates of USB sticks containing the brief, earlier this week.
