Washington Wizards use iPads

The Washington Wizards made team history this week by kicking off their training camp this Tuesday at midnight.  They also made NBA history by becoming the first basketball team in the league to scrap their paper playbook in favor of brand new iPads.

Team owner Ted Leonsis is a high-tech wizard and made his millions during his time as a corporate executive with AOL in 90s so he encourages the team to try new things.  Wizards Coach Flip Saunders had already introduced the team to interactive playbooks  last summer when he provided all the players with an iPod Touch loaded up with all the team’s plays.  This season, Saunders is taking it a step further and has moved the 250 page playbook to iPads and is also including video edits from the team’s games.

If you thought yesterday's App Store sales were nice, you haven't seen anything yet. For some reason, a whole bunch of terrific apps are dropping their prices this weekend, and Touch Arcade has put together a nice roundup. TUAW Daily App choices Osmos, Archetype, Civilization Revolution, Secret of Monkey Island (and its sequel) and Hybrid 2 are all on sale for as cheap as 99 cents, as is Telltale's Puzzle Agent, Popcap's Bookworm and Peggle, and a host of other high-profile titles. Pretty crazy -- some of the App Store's most popular titles, including EA's Need for Speed series and Activision's Call of Duty Zombies games, are seeing the biggest drops in their lifetimes.

ABC's 'My Generation' IPad App... Did it Make the Grade?

Apps for iPads people in the know wondered just what the advertising community thought of the "My Generation" interactive TV experience last week... Because, after all, that's going to make a difference in how this new tool evolves... 

"Last week ABC introduced a "co-viewing" iPad app that's meant to enhance the new series "My Generation" by delivering poll questions, trivia and other elements in perfect sync with each episode as it airs.

I tried it out during last week's premiere of "My Generation," a show about a Texas high school class 10 years after graduation. Will I open it up again tonight when "My Generation" returns?"

Google Voice Coming to Your iPad?

Awaiting Release:

As you may know, Google submitted an official client for its Google Voice service to Apple last year.

Not only was it never approved (because it duplicated core iPhone functionality), as a result Apple instituted a new policy against all Google Voice apps. All the other available clients were pulled, and until recently, we had all given up on having a native app for the service on our iDevices.

Google refused to confirm or deny the information, but there seems to be no reason why they wouldn’t proceed. Unless they want to keep the best Google Voice implementation as a differentiating aspect of Android, or maybe, they’re still holding a grudge. We feel pretty confident that the app will become a reality.

We’ll find out soon enough.

Apple released last night the new iteration of its beta firmware for the iPad/iPhone/iPod, iOS 4.2 Beta 2.

Few changes have been noticed, but a couple new features are noteworthy:

- When switching between apps via the Multitasking Bar, iOS 4.2 Beta 2 features a new animation effect, similar to the slide transitions seen with applications like Keynote or PowerPoint

The New Yorker is launching an iPad version of the magazine Monday, in a significant test of an iconic, old-media brand's efforts to refashion itself for the tablet-computer age.

Among the special features of the New Yorker's iPad app, the David Hockney cover animates so that users get a brush-by-brush recreation.

The launch highlights the mounting pressure on Apple Inc. to give publishers a way to sell their magazines more than one digital issue at a time. Executives from the New Yorker and its publisher, Condé Nast, say the true value of apps like the New Yorker's can't be realized until readers are allowed to purchase subscriptions.

"It is important to the New Yorker that we have offerings that allow long-term relationships with the consumers," said Condé Nast President Bob Sauerberg. "Obviously, we don't have that in place for the moment with Apple. We are very keen to do that."

The New Yorker's iPad application, at $4.99 an issue, comes with many of the bells and whistles now familiar to readers of periodicals on the device: an animated cover, slideshows and bonus content including extra cartoons and a video guide to reading the issue featuring actor and avid New Yorker reader Jason Schwartzman.

Apple granted patent for hand recognition!

Apple granted patent for handheld that recognizes your hands

You could probably fill a book with Apple patent applications that never amounted to anything, but here's one that's at least been granted -- a "handheld device" that uses capacitive sensors to recognize your identity just by the way you hold it, and subsequently personalize the device's buttons and settings to your hand based on your user profile. That's all that's actually been patented here, but the general idea is a little more grand -- you could theoretically grip a handheld with either hand, and it would automatically generate "button zones" under each finger using sensors (or disappearing buttons, perhaps) baked right into the chassis, making cries of "you're holding it wrong" hopefully fade into obscurity. Still, it's not the first time we've seen Cupertino reaching for digit recognition and we're sure it won't be the last, so we'll just file away our enthusiasm until or unless Jobs announces it on stage.

Apple iPads Right on "Target"

Target has announced that Apple’s highly popular iOS tablet, theiPad, will make its debut in retail stores across the U.S. on Sunday, October 3.

Currently, you can buy Apple’s iPad from two retailers: Best Buy, and Apple itself. However, at a press conference at Target’s headquarters in Minneapolis, the company announced that it will be carrying four models of the iPad: the 16, 32, and 64 GB versions of the Wi-Fi model, and an unspecified 3G version. We find it a bit strange that Target wouldn’t carry all six models, but perhaps Target’s customers aren’t really interested in shelling out $829 for a 64 GB 3G iPad (Update: Target tells us that this was a misunderstanding — they will, in fact, carry all six models).

A woman in Oklahoma City used her iPad to track the timing of her contractions. But it turns out, she possibly paid too much attention to technology and waited to go to the hospital.

When she soon realized the baby was coming, her husband called 911 and talked him through the birth.

A paramedic arrived just as the 6 pound, 2 ounce bundle of joy was about to enter the world.

One of this new accessories is a BMW holder for the Apple iPad which makes its debut in the new BMW X3 and will be available for all other model series from spring 2011. The iPad cradle allows for horizontal and vertical viewing, based on passengers’ preferences and functions performed. The horizontal mode caters to viewing photos or videos, while the portrait mode is more suitable for office applications.

Furthermore, the iPad available for rear-seat passengers can be connected to an ad-hoc WiFi hotspot. The connection to the internet is established using an internet-compatible mobile phone or data-enabled SIM card.
