VLC for iPad and iPhone may Soon Disappear from App Store

By Bill | October 31, 2010 |

Popular iPad and iPhone media player VLC has been out for less than 45 days and its days may already be numbered. Videolan, makers of VLC for the Mac, PC and Linux, sent Apple a copyright infringement letter stating that VLC for the iPad and iPhone infringes on its Open Source License. The iOS version of VLC is made by a third-party French company Applidium and it seems that the Videolan guys aren’t too happy that Applidium used their open-source code for an app in Apple’s App Store.

Magazine Magazine Apps for iPads ; Do They Cut It?

ipad-digital-magazines

In their debut, the majority of magazine apps for iPads appear to be doing little to utilize the digital possibilities available to them, and critics are taking notice. Will they respond and follow the lead of other successful apps, or is this medium going to continue struggling to keep its head above water?

So what magazine iPad apps have you tried out? Which do you like and which do you not? What makes the difference?

Did an iPad Accompany YOUR Child to School Today?

When my oldest was on campus, which was only a few short years ago, the only way one got to

have internet access was to pay the university for a hard wired connection in their dorm room.

Those days are long gone as you see students lounging all over their campuses using everything

from laptops to tablets and now iPads. Who would have thought we would have to worry about

having enough bandwidth to power their apps for iPads?

Now the HIGH SCHOOL I attended hands out an iPad to every student!

Times have certainly changed and school districts and institutions hopefully with it.

Apple's iPad Goes to School!

A bevy of universities has Apple iPad pilots underway.

Loyola is using the iPad for e-textbooks in its executive MBA program with a blended app suite for alumni collaboration. Duke University is testing the iPad in field research. Abilene Christian University has limited iPad testing in the classroom to build on an iPhone program started in 2008.

The wild-card is whether universities are ready for the shift.

At the Gartner Symposium in Orlando Sunday, analyst Ron Bonig walked through the key questions revolving around Apple iPad deployments in educational settings. Of course, it’s not like universities have much of a choice—the students are bringing along the iPad regardless. Apple products are the student preference.

But Bonig’s points are notable because they also apply to corporate settings. Looking at the agenda here, Apple in the enterprise could be the big theme. Last year’s conference illustrated the CIO interest in Google and its corporate email offering. This year’s conference has the heaviest dose of Apple I’ve ever seen.

Among the key themes to ponder as iPads invade universities:

 • Is there enough bandwidth? Bonig said that campuses have to assume every student has a mobile device. The game changer with the iPad is that it is optimized for rich media and graphics. Bonig’s presentation noted:

“Institutions that have already fitted out their academic buildings with ubiquitous wireless will need to reassess the number and placement of Wi-Fi points as an increasing number of faculty members begin to use mobile devices and rich media in their classes. Unfortunately, what looked to be a technology-enhanced classroom two years ago may be inadequate in the next few semesters, if not now.”

iPad App Remote Controlled TAXICAB!

Germans have taken apps for iPads to a whole new level! Apple Hot News even captured it on video!

A team from Germany is headlining iPad news with a taxi-cab that can drive itself with the simple click of a button. This sounds so amazing and cool but exactly how does it work you ask? Well all of the magic comes directly from an iPad application.

You simply put in the coordinates that you want the car to drive to and that’s it! The un-manned car uses a variety of laser scanners, cameras, radars and GPS systems that seems to work out really well with this experiment. The test vehicle is appropriately stamped “Made in Germany” for the world to see, although I do still have my doubts. You can track the cars exact location via the iPadapplication and when the car arrives at your location you can then re-input the data and redirect the car with you in it.

Be sure to check out this video that shows the iPad controlled vehicle!

Will Your iPad Make You Sick?

Lifehacker is helping our today with suggestions on how to clean your electronics

without compromising them.

I don’t know about you, but here at Apps for iPads have been trying to avoid anyone that looks the least bit sick.

Cleaning touchscreen gadgets can be tricky… so use care in cleaning your iPad.

How to Safely Disinfect and Clean Your Gadgets

Flu season is creeping its way toward us once again, and your gadgets are among the most

germ-ridden objects in your house. Here's how to safely disinfect them.

So how is the BEST way to clean your iPad?

...but not necessarily on touchscreens...

The trickier matter is cleaning touchscreen devices like your tablet or smartphone. Appledoesn't recommend using anything with alcohol, ammonia, and other popular cleaners in it, though some quick googling reveals substantial anecdotal evidence that it won't noticeably harm your screen in small doses. However, if you don't feel comfortable taking that route, you have other choices.

...unless you've got a screen protector...

Your first option is to get a screen protector, like the popular Power Support anti-glare film or, my personal favorite, the ZAGG InvisibleSHIELD, and use the above alcohol/disinfectant method. Screen protectors cover up the supposedly delicate oleophobic screen coating on many devices, freeing you up to use pretty much any cleaning products you want. Again, just be very careful about getting your phone too wet—even if you don't damage anything, you could trip your gadget's moisture sensor and void your warranty.

...or use a gentler alternative...

If you're anti-screen protector, a few products on the market can disinfect your gadgets without eating away at the screen, like the recommended-by-Apple iKlenz spray or Monster CleanTouch. You'll have to shell out 20 bucks at an Apple Store or online (as opposed to stopping at the local Walgreen's for a bottle of alcohol), but it's probably the best way to go if you're particularly paranoid about adverse effects on your phone's screen.

...but don't forget to use a little common sense.

Lastly, and most importantly, is a little common sense: The best way to avoid illness is to wash your hands regularly, especially when you go around touching other people's stuff. It won't stop them from spreading germs to your iPad, necessarily, but the more we keep our germs to ourselves, the less we spread them to others.

Please READ the REST of the STORY at Lifehacker’s website… and stay HEALTHY!
